Mobile World Congress 2010: I came, I saw, I walked away underwhelmed

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Three weeks ago today I, and about 50,000 other people, walked through the two towers that stand at the entrance of the Fira de Barcelona and attended the first day of Mobile World Congress 2010. This was my second time at the show, and for some of my colleagues it was their third visit, so we all had a rough idea of what was going to happen. Expectations were set appropriately low , with only a few glimpses of hope for Windows Mobile 7, Android, and … well that’s it

FCC seeks more wireless spectrum for mobile broadband data networks

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

The FCC is looking to free up to 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless broadband over the next ten years and it will try to buy the airwaves from broadcasters. The move would help avert what FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski calls a “ spectrum crisis ” that could leave data-hungry mobile devices like the iPhone, Droid, and 3G-enabled laptops starving for wireless data AT&T ( NYSE: T ), for example, has seen a 5,000% increase in mobile data usage over the last three years thanks to the iPhone. Existing airwave holders like Fox, NBC, and ABC will be able to voluntarily give up spectrum for a cut of the auction proceeds

If your operator turns on CPC (continuous packet connectivity) your handset’s battery life can be doubled

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Now I’m no network engineer, but if Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) Siemens Networks is to believed then once an operator enables “continuous packet connectivity” (CPC) on their HSPA+ network, the battery life of the mobile phone in your pocket can be increased by 100% if you’re transferring data, and by 50% for voice calls. There are many unanswered questions here. How does this work, why doesn’t it work on vanilla HSPA and UMTS, will the same type of improvements be obtainable with LTE
