Verizon Wireless said it has fixed a software issue that caused customers east of the Mississippi to not receive mobile data or get 3G at pathetic speeds. he nation’s largest mobile operator said there was a bad switch software at one of their data centers that caused slower data speeds, or no access at all to the 3G network. The network was suffering for about four hours and Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) did not say how many users were impacted

The FCC is looking to free up to 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless broadband over the next ten years and it will try to buy the airwaves from broadcasters. The move would help avert what FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski calls a “ spectrum crisis ” that could leave data-hungry mobile devices like the iPhone, Droid, and 3G-enabled laptops starving for wireless data AT&T ( NYSE: T ), for example, has seen a 5,000% increase in mobile data usage over the last three years thanks to the iPhone. Existing airwave holders like Fox, NBC, and ABC will be able to voluntarily give up spectrum for a cut of the auction proceeds

Orange has retained its position as the top mobile broadband provider in the UK, according to a survey by independent research company YouGov. Orange was ranked top for customer services and reliability, while customers also rated Orange’s mobile broadband service top in a further seven out of 15 categories, including ‘ease of use’ and ‘upload speeds’. Orange offers a selection of mobile broadband and connected laptops in the UK, and in November 2009, made it even easier for customers to access content online by offering two new dongles, the Orange e1752 and the Option 515M, as well as two new laptops; the Asus 1005HGO and the embedded Compaq CQ61, both featuring the operating system Windows 7.

Novatel Wireless has announced that it has successfully completed another data transmission (see the post about 4G data here ), this time over dual-carrier HSPA+, using Qualcomm ( NSDQ: QCOM )’s MDM8220 chipset.

Wow. That was a mouthful….! Novatel Wireless has announced that its MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot software platform is ready for carrier type approvals on MiFi 2352 and MiFi 2372 products. The MiFi software platform is architected to support major 3G and 4G air interfaces, including EV-DO Rev.A, HSPA and WiMax, with new functions and capabilities beyond connectivity.

The Ford sync had a big presence at last year’s CES, touting all sorts of connectivity, but one especially impressive feature is yet to come: mobile internet. Apparently the next version of sync will include communications to USB-connected mobile broadband modems, which would basically turn the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot on wheels
